The Animal Welfare Assessment Contest (AWJAC) is an educational competition organized by the AVMA that enhances students’ skills in assessing animal welfare using scientific methods. It is open to veterinary students, undergraduates, graduate students, veterinary technicians, and AVMA members. Participants evaluate the welfare of various animals in different settings, including live scenarios. The 2024 contest will cover dairy cows, laboratory frogs, zoo penguins, and commercial dog breeding, and will be held at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls from November 22-24.

Virtual Scenarios
Ethical and Effective Training in Animal Welfare
Virtual scenarios are simulated environments used to create realistic and controlled settings for training and assessment purposes. They are important because they allow participants to practice and evaluate animal welfare assessments without the need for live animals. These scenarios can replicate various conditions and challenges that animals might face, providing a safe and ethical way to enhance learning and decision-making skills. Virtual scenarios also enable consistent training experiences and can be accessed remotely, making them a versatile tool for education and professional development.
